IN A 98 CHEVY MALIBU 2.4 ENGINE, HOW IS IT THAT THE COILS PROVIDE LIKE 40K VOLTS OF ELECTRICITY TO THE PLUG?

In a 98 chevy malibu 2.4 engine, how is it that the coils provide like 40k volts of electricity to the plug? My car does not have a distributor. It has two coils that connect to two spark plugs each. Where are the coils getting all that voltage from to supply to the spark plugs? Because the battery only provides 12 volts right? And the alternator just runs to recharge the battery. Right?
